ABSTRACT
Mrs. Baum (48) presented for depression and couples therapy. She lived with her husband. Their (only) child had left the house last year. In the first sessions, it emerged that during the past 25 years she had developed a terrible grudge against her husband. Her husband revealed that there were many days that she barely spoke to him. Probing by the therapist revealed the following; TWenty five years ago Mrs. Baum gave birth to a child who lived for only one day. Mrs. Baum was not only upset by the death of the child but even more by what she called the "roughness" of her husband. He had not supported her at all and had even persuaded her to have sex with him on the day the child died. She never got over this and regularly observed that her husband had not changed and still reacted in a "rough" way.
