Combinatorial analysis (1) is a branch of arithmetic, the object of which is to count sets of objects and symbols which can be formed under determined conditions; it finds its application in the most diverse fields of mathematics, in particular in algebra (for instance in the theory of determinants), in the theory of the groups of substitutions and in the calculus of probability.
