ABSTRACT
The most ancient Greek mathematical work which has reached us complete is Euclid's Elements. But the perfection of this work, the refinement of the critical standards according to which it was written, indicates, even if there were no other documents to do so, that Euclid's writings are not the beginning, but rather the conclusive result, of a long period of evolution of mathematical thought.
