Reproduced by permission of the American Anthropological Association from Memoir 93, 1962. Frederick O. Gearing is Professor of Anthropology at State University of New York at Buffalo. He earned the Ph.D. in anthropology at the University of Chicago in 1957. He previously taught at the University of Washington, 1957-61, and at the University of California, Riverside, 1961-1969. His research interests have included studies in “action” anthropology, focused on the Fox community in Tama, Iowa, 1952-56; 18th-century Cherokee political organization; village social structure in Kardamili, a rural Greek village, 1960-62; action research on curriculum development and teacher training in a Riverside, California elementary school. Dr. Gearing’s latest book is The Face of the Fox (Aldine, 1970).
