He is Professor of Human Development and of Anthropology at the University of Chicago, where he received his B.A. and M.A. degrees; he earned the Ph.D. at Harvard University in 1958. His field work among the Gusii of Kenya in 1955-57 was part of the Six Culture Study of Socialization. In 1961-62 he did field research on socialization, child development, and personality among the Yoruba of western Nigeria and in 1969 among the Hausa of northern Nigeria. In addition to his anthropological activities, he received training at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis during the period 1962-68. Among his many publications are Nyansongo: A Gusii Community in Kenya and Dreams and Deeds: Achievement Motivation in Nigeria.
