He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1962. In addition to his professorial position, he is a Research Associate at the American Museum of Natural History and Science Advisor to the Pyrrenean Institute of Anthropological Study (Toulouse). He has done field work among French Basques since 1962. Among his research interests are general anthropological theory, the anthropological study of art and culture, and Basque culture and ethnography.
