ABSTRACT

Countries around the world are reforming their welfare systems to tackle the challenge of demographic aging, declining labor participation and low fertility rates. These trends, combined, are eroding dependency ratios and calling into question the sustainability of existing social security measures for the older population. Longer life spans are creating new opportunities but also new risks necessitating a fundamental rethink of social security policy in long-life societies. The preceding chapters explore the gender impact of recent reforms in a range of different welfare states.
