Heads and Freaks
Reprinted from the Journal of Health and Social Behavior 9, no. 2 (June 1968): 156-63. Fred Davis is Professor of Sociology at the University of California Medical Center, San Francisco. Laura Munoz is a graduate student in Sociology at the University of California, San Francisco. Davis has applied his expertise as a social psychologist in the symbolic interactionist tradition to understanding a wide range of substantive issues, particularly in studies of the medical profession, of stigmatization, and of coping with the crises of illness and disablement. This article is a reflection of his research interest in youth and in San Francisco; he has written more on both subjects.
