He has made theoretical and substantive contributions to a wide range of sociological subjects. He is known best for his comparative work on family behavior, represented by a series of articles on illegitimacy, and by his books, World Revolution and Family Patterns (Free Press, 1963) and After Divorce (Free Press, 1966).
