The Current Use of Big Data in Evaluation

BySteven Højlund, Karol Olejniczak, Gustav Jakob Petersson, Jakub Rok

This chapter presents the use of Big Data in the evaluation of public interventions and the use of Big Data in the social sciences. Similarly, surveys are rarely continuous events of data collection, but usually, they take place over the course of a fixed time period. Evaluators partake in evaluation communities all across the world, and the communities are very different with regard to sector, organization, methodology, culture, language, and evaluation principles. Compared to other databases focused on natural sciences, SCOPUS has substantial share of social sciences. Even more troubling, there is virtually no discussion about the emerging trend and its implications for the craft of public policy evaluation. Somewhat overlapping with transport is a group of articles on environment and spatial planning. The chapter looks at the small population of articles that discussed the use of Big Data to design, implementation, and evaluation of public interventions.
