ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of the uses of transport data considering traditional forms to enable a better understanding of what is identified here separately as conventional and innovative uses of Big Data. It discusses the uses of data are considered in each case for road traffic and public transport separately, with traffic being across all roads and all vehicle types, whereas public transport includes government agencies organizing services along set routes on roads, rail, and water. The chapter looks at the broad issue of the lack of evidence of evaluators being active in the field of transportation Big Data and then considers four specific issues in light of the framework of traditional data and conventional and innovative Big Data uses. The four specific issues are data trustworthiness, access to information on Big Data solutions, identifying whether appropriate Big Data solutions are being adopted, and privacy.
