ABSTRACT

Work overload has received a great deal of attention from many organizational behaviour researchers because it significantly affects employees' psychological health and well-being as well as organizational performance. This chapter reviews the logic of how goal commitment and work overload interactively influence employee creativity. It discusses the effects of task feedback from the supervisor and organizational reward for competence on the linkage among goal commitment, work overload, and employee creativity. Positive task feedback from the supervisor refers to the constructive information provided by one's supervisor on the value of one's preceding efforts. However, positive feedback from a supervisor can buffer the negative impact of work overload on creativity under high goal commitment. The contextual factor that can enhance or mitigate the negative effect of high goal commitment on the relationship between work overload on creativity is organizational reward for competence.
