ABSTRACT
Particular forms and types of unreality come and go with the seasons, but the mechanisms are enduring. In somewhat different words, the mechanisms are the "New Realities" underlying "Unreality." Seven major mechanisms can be found in every form and type of unreality. The general mechanisms are dumbing down—the pervasiveness of Anti-Intellectualism in American Life; the radical reversal of the normal order; unreality is "more real" and better than reality; the commercialization—the selling—of everything; and the immortality project—the radical rejection of reality, reality is death. Some other mechanisms are the radical conversion/transformation of all of reality into unreality; the acceptance/normalization of the bizarre and the antisocial; and the misrepresentation/radical distortion of reality and truth—the blurring of all boundaries. All of the major mechanisms are involved in every type of unreality because of the significant overlaps between them. The major mechanisms are distinct only in the sense that they can be clearly identified that is named, not because they are independent.
