ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses measurement approaches used for the outcomes and provides examples and sample measurement tools. It describes approaches to the measurement of barriers and enjoyment in the psychological domain. The chapter presents adherence in the behavioral domain. Adherence is important, but also whether or not their physical activity routine is sustained outside of the intervention. This allows researchers to gain insight on the long-term effects of the intervention. The chapter illustrates why researchers and practitioners should consider measuring beyond the specific physical activity behavior when evaluating the impact of their physical activity interventions or programs. It focuses on barriers, enjoyment, and adherence. The chapter presents tools that are useful for assessment. It provides these tools generally originate from validated questionnaires published in research papers, and references to these studies are provided. Although some researchers have studied theories and their application to physical activity maintenance, this area of research is quite limited.
