ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the research that has been carried out into lesson study (LS) and founds the convenient report findings from LS research in relation to the following themes: growth and geographical spread of LS research, school settings and subject focus, sample characteristics and scale of LS research, variations and adaptations of LS, research focus and findings. The chapter identifies the four main kinds of samples and LS configuration in the reviewed research: department/school-based LS groups, cross-school LS groups, whole district LS networks, and course-based LS groups. Research by the members of Lesson Study Research Group at the University of Leicester School of Education, reviews that developing important insights into the use of LS in initial teacher education (ITE) settings. The review of the research literature has shown that the influence of LS has spread across the Asia, Europe, North America, Africa and the Middle East. These research findings are significant in advancing the understandings about the LS.
