ABSTRACT

By 2012 and the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in Rio de Janeiro from 20 to 22 June, the concept of sustainable development had come to occupy center stage on the global agenda. This was clearly reflected by UN SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon during his Rio+20 press conference. He declared that he had made sustainable development the “number one priority” for his second term as secretarygeneral and emphasized that “sustainable development is an idea whose time has come.”1
