ABSTRACT
On a physical level Crum makes frequent reference to the power of meditation, to correct breathing, as one way to slow down and retain a clear focus. Incorporated as part of daily practice, when people have the space and quiet to reflect, these skills can help when tensions do rise and conflicts do emerge. As a starting point, many students, faculty, and staff at the University of Ngozi insist that they can and must teach the skills of peace building at every level and in every school and university. Accordingly, Burundians are very clear about the importance of teaching about peace and reconciliation. The ethnic identification of Hutus and Tutsis was created by Europeans. Ethnic and cultural differences have certainly played a large role in American history. For many, the story of colonization was one of supposedly advanced European cultures with their superior technology and military firepower overwhelming indigenous communities in the Western hemisphere.
