ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book compiles a fascinating collection of accounts about China’s migrant workers and about the neighbourhoods in which they live – particularly thechengzhongcun – villages in the city, or urban villages for short. Rural migrants continue to flow into Chinese cities – cumulatively anywhere between 130 and 200 million have done so since the opening up. China’s strong government means that there is a lower limit on a migrant household’s choice of how much housing to consume. Migrants have apparently had sufficient labour-market power to win back a modest portion of rent from capital owners. The book gives an insight into the attitude towards risk found among rural migrants.
