ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the use of quantitative questionnaires. A questionnaire is a research method which usually consists of a series of questions used to collect quantitative and/or qualitative data. For each type of inferential statistic there are certain formats that should be used when reporting both significant and non-significant findings. Response rates can begin to significantly decline as the questionnaire increases in length. This can contribute to difficulties in recruiting participants, especially if they have no vested interest in completing the questionnaire. Two key concepts related to the use of questionnaires are reliability and validity. Reliability can relate to the internal consistency of the questionnaire. It is important to have an understanding of the specific inclusion criteria for the participants in the study in order to answer the research question. This will ensure that one can design every element of the questionnaire with the characteristics of the population in mind.
