Reenvisioning Masculinities in the Context of Confl ict Transformation

The Gender Politics of Demilitarizing Northern Ireland Society
WithFidelma Ashe

Processes of demilitarization are often central aspects of societies emerging from violent ethnic confl icts. As feminist scholars have illustrated, both the militarization and demilitarization of societies are highly gendered processes that are interlinked with particular manifestations of masculinities (see Enloe 2000; Cockburn, this volume). Northern Ireland is going through a period of confl ict transformation, and the processes of demilitarization that have emerged in that region offer insights into the constitution and reconstitution of masculinities in militarized societies more widely.
