ABSTRACT

Bangkok is a large, resilient, middle-income Southeast Asian metropolis of 10.3 million people (2010). This figure refers to the core Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) area and is made up of 5.7 million registered inhabitants and an estimated 4.6 million unregistered migrants. The capital of Thailand (known as Siam until 1939) has been at its present location for about 230 years. Over this period of time it has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to recover quickly from shocks and disturbances.
