Over and over the future of foreign newsgathering is described in terms of a Darwinian drama. “While there are still correspondents based abroad,” noted former foreign correspondent and media critic Marvin Kalb (1990, xiv), “the genre known as ‘foreign correspondent’ is becoming extinct.” Peter Arnett (1998, 52), the longtime correspondent for CNN and the Associated Press (AP), is no less climactic: “International news coverage in most of America’s mainstream papers has almost reached the vanishing point”.
