Increasingly nowadays, a child's educational career and even the kind of employment he eventually obtains depend upon how well he performs in a series of examinations. The General Certificate of Education Ordinary level examination (GCE '0' levels) and the Certificate of Secondary Education Examinations (CSE) are particularly influential, since they are the last secondary-school examinations available to most pupils before they leave school, and passes in at least two or three subjects in these examinations are now demanded by many employers and educational establishments before they will even consider an applicant for employment or further education (Careers for School Leavers, 1967).
