ABSTRACT

Background Information Sudan lies in the northern part of Africa, bordering the Red Sea, between Egypt and Eritrea. The Nile River and its tributaries dominate its landscape. With an area of over 2.5 million square kilometers, it is the largest country on the continent. The terrain is generally marked by fl at plains, although there are mountains in the east and west. The climate is tropical in the south. Arid desert conditions prevail in the north, with a rainy season lasting from June to October. Soil erosion and desertifi cation are observable environmental problems.
