Background Information The Republic of Indonesia is an archipelago with 17,000 islands; some of the largest islands are Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Papua, Bali, and Maluku. The most populated island is Java, which includes the capital, Jakarta. On August 17, 1945, Indonesia declared its independence after almost three and a half years of Japanese occupation.
