ABSTRACT

This chapter examines dynamics and change in the Iranian family during the 20th century, especially subsequent to the Islamic revolution in 1979. Two main questions are addressed: To what extent has the family changed over these years in Iran? And how have ideas affected change? We begin by describing historical family values and customs and discuss the changes that have taken place. Next, social structural changes are discussed and consideration is given to the extent to which family dynamics and change have been influenced by structural changes or ideational forces. In particular, we focus on the roles of religion, revolution, and the state in family dynamics, continuity, and change, and discuss the elements of family life that have continued unchanged throughout the years.
