The foundation for the cognitivist paradigm in writing was laid when the notion of problem solving, well-established in psychology, was applied to writing tasks. In a cognitivist framework, the production of a text is the result of an individual's interaction with both content and audience information. The mental arena in which writing is planned and revised is the writer's task environment.
