Response: Curricular Responsibilities and Professional

Professional Definition Charles Bazerman

The essays in this volume pose three questions for the profession of writing. The first two are fully explicit, the last less so:

1. How should we understand writing? 2. Given our understanding of writing, should first-year writing

courses continue in their current form or in any form? 3. Given an understanding of writing that extends far beyond the

bounds of the first-year writing course, should the profession remain so tied to and defined by that curricular responsibility?
