Maria Montessori (1870–1952)

Maria Montessori was born at Chiaravalle, in the province of Ancoma, Italy, on August 31, 1870. She had well-educated parents. Her father, Alessandro, was a military man. Her mother, Renilde, was a pious, articulate, and highly literate woman, for whom Montessori had great affection. Standing recounts that when Montessori was in school she had a teacher who required the students to learn by heart the lives of famous women, in order to incite the students to imitate them. When asked by the teacher whether she would like to become famous, Montessori replied, “I shall never be that. I care too much for the children of the future to add yet another biography to the list.”2
