ABSTRACT

In 2003, you read an article about a Chinese eco-city and say, “This sounds intriguing.” Or you might say, “China?” in disbelief, having read for years about the country’s disastrous environmental impacts resulting from its manufacturing and economic development policies. The eco-city is supposed to house 500,000 people by 2050, be carbonneutral and “zero-waste” and based entirely on renewable energy. “Wow,” you might think, “I didn’t know that was possible.”
