ABSTRACT

The phenomenon of ‘regional parliamentarization’ – a process led by (inter)parliamentary bodies formed around regional policy initiatives and intergovernmental organizations – is expanding fast. Especially in the periphery of the European Union (EU), (inter)parliamentary assemblies and fora have proliferated in both its eastern and southern parts, linked to regional groupings and processes and often driven by the European Union itself. Though there is no general agreement on the actual number of regional (inter)parliamentary assemblies one may advance the figure of about seventy worldwide.
