Pages 6

Knowledge of the author, Joseph ben Matthias, who took the Roman name Flavius Josephus, is confined to his books. Born into an aristocratic family of priests, his education, which included fluency in Greek and Latin as well as Hebrew and Aramaic, was preparation to become a historian. In 64 he traveled to Rome to secure release of imprisoned members of the priesthood, a mission that succeeded. On his return to Judea in 66, he became governor of Lower Galilee, and the next year commander of military forces in the city of Jotapata.
