Academic student support and development

The student learning experience in modern higher education settings has changed significantly and continues to alter at an ever-increasing pace, as described elsewhere in this book. The increasingly diverse student community and their high level of expectations mean that we can no longer adopt a linear approach to education. As McCaffery argues:

The increasing heterogeneity of the student body (in terms of entry level qualifications, prior learning and prior working experience, age and ethnic mix, etc.) along with the heightened expectations of students as fee-payers, has generated and will continue to do so, a concomitant demand for customised and personalised service, not one that is or has been based on, a standardised ‘one size fits all’ approach.
