Supporting learning and teaching: improving academic engagement
This chapter focuses on supporting the student learning experience in higher education (HE) through improving student engagement. Learning and teaching is at the heart of the student experience and, indeed for many, constitutes the bulk or even the totality of their student experience. Furthermore, students’ experience of the curriculum has a profound influence on their retention and success in HE. Curriculum in the HE context is open to interpretation but it is used here to cover programme contents, pedagogy, academic development, feed-forward and feedback and assessment (see Crosling et al. 2008 for a fuller discussion). This chapter argues that the curriculum can be designed and delivered to promote the engagement, sense of belonging and retention of students. It does not, however, focus on assessment issues.
