Leading from the Head, the Heart and the Whole Body: Kingstone School, Barnsley: Alistair Chambers

Editor’s introduction This chapter shows how a thematic approach to teaching collaboratively for crosscurriculum projects can be developed in a way that bridges the pedagogical gap which exists between high schools and their feeder primary schools. It highlights the use of established drama-based teaching conventions, such as Dorothy Heathcote’s Mantle of the Expert in the humanities, in order to strengthen and deepen students’ understanding. The chapter also shows how the personalisation agenda is reflected through project-based learning (PBL) in which teachers become able to develop alternative pedagogical strategies and teaching stances (Craft et al., 2007).
