ABSTRACT

While this volume is framed in a Kuhnian perspective, it is important to understand that there are different versions of the Kuhnian formulation. The original formulation (Kuhn, 1962) is the one most often cited, with its emphasis on dramatic paradigm shifts. There is little empirical evidence or comprehensive theory supporting the extreme version of paradigm shift. In a symposium reported by Lakatos and Musgrave (1970), Kuhn (1970) modified his earlier position and suggested a far less dramatic notion of paradigm shift. Given this divergent set of perspectives on the issue of paradigm shifts, I will invoke authorial prerogative to amend the questions set out for framing the chapters in this volume.
