ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I set out the justification for the inclusion of literature in English as an international language (EIL) contexts, examine the curricular settings, and discuss various interpretations of literature. I then examine possible approaches to the teaching of literature, making a case for “literature as appropriation” especially in EIL contexts. A powerful way of incorporating an EIL perspective is through text selection. Literature can also be incorporated into an EIL context through Extensive Reading, Performance, Creative Writing, and a variety of activities for getting inside the skin of a text. These are discussed and exemplified.
