ABSTRACT

Employee Assistance Programmes (EAP) and Work-life (WL) services grew in the UK largely together and later than in the USA/North America. They began to emerge in the late 1970s. However, before this period, employees in the UK were, and continue to be, supported, and still are in many organisations, by a range of excellent services including internal welfare, human resources and occupational health services. These other services have provided a valuable mixture of EAP-type interventions, including proactive support and coaching for line managers, along with practical assistance for the full range of WL issues.
