Introductory chapter: education and equality – conceptual and practical considerations

ByMike Cole

Introduction: equality and equal opportunities IN ORDER TO BE AWARDED Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in England and Wales, teachers must demonstrate that they have high expectations of and respect for all pupils (S1.1 of Training and Development Agency (TDA) 2006: 8) (my emphasis).1 If teachers are to do this, then it is self-evident that they need to be aware of the way in which social class, gender, ethnicity, disability and sexuality impact on pupils’ lives.2 Teaching and learning about equality, then, is not an optional extra, something to be tagged on to teacher education courses after the important stuff has been dealt with. It is, rather, an integral part of the teaching and learning process.
