ABSTRACT
From Alfred Kinsey’s studies of the sexual behavior of men and women in the 1950s to
popular views today, many of us assume that heterosexuality is natural (Kinsey et al. 1948;
Kinsey et al. 1953). In addition, the idea of heterosexuality as a social identity is assumed
always to have existed. Recent scholarship, however, has challenged these widespread beliefs.
