ABSTRACT

Born in 1860, Jane Addams was an American social reformer best known for her practical contributions to educational and industrial reform, women’s and children’s rights and pacifism. She was the co-founder of Hull House in 1889, a “settlement house” in Chicago where she continued to be involved in practical politics, education and social work throughout her life. She was also linked to Theodore Roosevelt’s Progressive Party in 1912, and to national and international campaigns for social justice, including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored Peoples, the American Civil Liberties Union and the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom.
