The Acquisition of Literacy in Italian

ByRemo Job, Francesca Peressotti, Claudio Mulatti

Orthography and Phonology The mapping of orthography into phonology is quite regular in Italian, and thus, according to the distinction between deep and shallow orthographies, Italian falls into the latter class. However, the system is not totally regular as there are a few letters that have word-specific pronunciations. Also, the mapping from phonology to orthography, although quite transparent, is not totally regular as some sounds may have word-specific orthographic realizations.
