ABSTRACT

The construction and diffusion of feminist ideas are closely linked to the women’s movement, which is crystallized in women-led nongovernmental organizations (NGO). These kinds of NGOs exist in all countries, even those experiencing strong religious repression. Political and sociological literature has recognized the emergence of women’s or feminist movements since the 1970s as part of the new social movements, which seek not only to satisfy material needs but also to build a new social order. This chapter offers a brief summary of the NGOs that have worked with women and gender in Latin America and examines their contribution to the educational field through their actions in formal, informal, and nonformal education. With the initiation of contemporary feminism in the third world, between 1975 and 1985, women’s situation and position in society and, subsequently, in development projects was identified under the term “women in development,” or Women in Development.
