ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with the transmission of gender concepts in two institutional arenas. One is development organizations, governmental and nongovernmental organizations whose mandate is to plan and execute projects for economic and social development in less privileged countries and regions. One of the central challenges involved in bringing about greater gender justice in the real world is disseminating new understandings of gender and gender relations among persons who are not necessarily convinced of the need for such change. Latin America functions as a single region for many purposes related to development questions. Many development projects are regional or subregional. Many education and training activities have involved regional audiences, particularly when high-cost, standardized, pre-packaged courses are being used. Gender education in the world of institutions involved in development projects has fundamentally to do with bringing to awareness previously hide dimensions of reality so that development policies and projects can take them into account.
