ABSTRACT
The analysis of instinct presents problems that range from the philosophy of biology to ques tions on the nature of humanity. Recent attempts to solve them have entailed fundamental changes in the theories of ethology (the science of animal behavior); they are also relevant to public atti tudes on matters of social importance.
