Motivation

The word motivate means “to cause to move.” The concept of motivation can be broadly con strued to refer to the study of the immediate causes of behavior: those factors responsible for the arousal, maintenance, and termination of behavior. Bolles (1967) provides an excellent discussion of the historical origins of motiva tional concepts (see also Cofer Sc Appley, 1964).
