ABSTRACT

This case can be used in environmental management classes, accounting classes, business management classes, tourism classes, policy and planning classes, environmental design classes, and urban planning classes. Although the setting is a national park, the theme of the case is transportation issues and the concepts can easily be transferred to a discussion of transportation policies in cities, universities, places of employment, and other settings. The case was used in undergraduate classes in environmental issues at University College of the Cariboo and at Texas A&M in recreation, park, and tourism science classes. The case stimulated lively discussion as students could relate the circumstances of the case to their own situations. It helped them to understand why they drive to the university and other places and what might change their behavior. It has also been used in graduate-level classes at the University of Calgary to discuss the more philosophical issues, such as the mandate of national parks, changing behavior to more sustainable habits, and “our love of the automobile.”
