ABSTRACT

When psychiatry lost the mind, it also lost its hold on psychiatric diag nosis. Like so many medical terms, diagnosis has its roots in the Greek. Stedman’s Medical Dictionary defines gnosia as “The perceptive faculty enabling one to recognize the form and nature of persons and things; the faculty of perceiving and recognizing.”1 Dia means through or completely. To diagnose is to see through and to know something completely-to know its meaning.
