Since the beginning of the transatlantic slave trade in the sixteenth century, contacts between people living in Africa and the diaspora-descendants of African slaves in the Americas-have had infl uences of changing importance upon the development of cultures on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Commodities and people have traveled from Africa to America and back, and performance styles have traveled with them.
