ABSTRACT

The Stanford University research project on “Divided Memories: History Textbooks and East Asian History,” presented initially at an international conference at Stanford, compared the treatment of key historical events in East Asia between 1931 and 1950 in the high school history textbooks of China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and the United States. The excerpts from those translations, included in this volume, offer a comparative treatment of eight key events or historical issues during that historical period.
